Many town in the region are increasingly referred to also by their Basque names. San Sebastián, or Donostia, is a quintessential resort with two glorious beaches on its attractive bay. In the 19th century it became a holiday home for royalty, who built the Palacio de Miramar by exclusive Playa de Ondarreta beach. Nearly, artist Edoardo Chillida incorporated the rocks and sea into his famous Comb of the Winds sculture. Today, popular wiht all Spaniards, San Sebastián's August Semana Grande fiesta presents the best of Basque folklore, while the September Films Festival draws a truly international cast of stars. Both Festivals are held in and around the attractive old quarter, called the Parte Vieja. With their origins lost in the mists of time, a culture draped in enigma kept alive purely by oral traditions until the 1500's, and a language so old that romantics once believed that it was used in the Garden of Eden. the Basque remain one of the world's last surviving mysteries. From what seems like a thousand tiny fishing villages along Bizkaia, the Bay of Biscay, Euskadi gave birth to many of the pilots on the great voyages of discovery. Perhaps the most celebrated was Juan Sebastián Elcano, pilot of the Portuguese explorer, Ferdinand Magellan. When Magellan was killed in the Philippines in 1521, Juan Sebastián Elcano took command and guided five vessels and 265 sailors across the uncharted Pacific, through the Indin Ocean, around Africa and back home to a stunned nation. Although he was down to just one ship and 18 starving men, they were the first to sail around the globe. Area of Interest.... Buen Pastor Cathedral. An ensemble consisting of the Neo-Gpthic Temple, the Koldo Mitxelena Cultural Centre and the Post Office buildind, both in eclectic style. Mont Urgull. Park with wonderful views over the city. The Sacred Heart Statue; the Castle of la Mota (XII century), with an exibition on the city's History; and the English Cemetery. Kutxaespacio science Museum. This is an educational centre aimed at explaining scientific concepts to the visitor in a pleasant way. Aquarium. Located on the hillside of Mount Urgull, the Aquarium contains magnificent natural science collections and naval history displays, as well as an oceanarium, with shark, rays and tropical fishes.
