GOTHIC QUARTER BARCELONA SPAIN |
GOTHIC QUARTER BARCELONATracing it roots back to Carthage, whose ruling Barça family provided its name, Barcelona boasts the country's most complete Gothic Quarter, the Barri Gòtic in the native Catalan. At its center is the great La Seu Cathedral. Built by Ramon Berenguer I (12th century - Romanesque cathedral). MAP GOTHIC QUARTER Catedral de la Seu.
Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia The magnificent Gothic cathedral was built between 1298 and 1450, with the spire and neo Gothic facade added in 1897, architect Josep Oriol Mestres (the original design dates back to 1402 of Carles Gualtés). The facade consists of over one hundred figures of Catalan Modernist sculptors Joan Roig i Solé and Villmitjana Agapito. Cathedral Map Architects of Catalan Gothic churches strove to make the high altar visible to the entire congregation, hence the unusually wide central nave and slender side columns. Highlights are the beautifully carved choir stall; Santa Eulalia's tomb (Jaime Fabré and Lupo di Francesco), in the crypt; the battle-scarred crucifix in the Lepanto Chapel; the intimate Santa Llucia chapel, in the front right corner; and the tall cloister surrounding a tropical garden..... Church Map Plaça del Rei - Palau Reial Major - Plaça del Rei generally considered the oldest and most beautiful space in the Gothic Quarter. TThe Palau Reial Major was the residence of the kings of the Crown of Aragon. Upon Columbus's return from his first voyage to the New World, the Catholic Monarchs received him on the stairs fanning out here and in the Saló del Tinell, a magnificent banquet hall built by Guillermo Carbonell (1359-1362). Other ancient buildings around the square are the Palau del Lloctinent, the chapel of Santa Agata, and the Palau Clariana Padellàs XV - XVI century. Was moved in 1931, stone by stone , from the Merchants Street style Gothic (MHCB) Plaça Sant Jaume - Palau de la Generalitat and Ajuntament (city hall)- Salón
de Cent.
This central square behind the cathedral houses both Catalona's and Barcelona's governements. This Plaça was built in the 1840, but the two imposing buildings facing each other across it are much older. The 14th-century ajuntament (city hall) to the left has an impressive black-and burnished-gold mural (1928) by Josep Maria Sert and the famous Saló de Cent (Salón de Cent built in the 1369), from which the Council of One Hundred ruled Barcelona between 1372 and 1714. You can wander into the courtyard, but to visit the interior you need to make arrangements with the office ahead of time. You can 'visit on Sunday morning. The Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalán), (Generalidad de Cataluña - Castellano.) opposite, seat of the autonomous Catalan governement, is an elegant 15th-century palace with a lovely courtyard and a second-floor patio with orange trees. The room whose windows you can see at from is the Saló de Sant Jordi (St. George), named for Catalonia's dragon-slaying patron saint. Normally you can visit the Generalitat only on dia de Sant Jordi (Sant George day) April 23, check with the protocol office. Recently every two Sundays will open to the public. |
