HISTORY OF BARCELONA

As Spain's second largest metropolis, Barcelonians feel their city matches the nation's capital in every respect and especially in its art and architecture.
Whether it is work presented in museums or boldly displayed on the streets and beaches, the city is a showcase of creativity. From ancient Romanesque, via Art Nouveau that Spain calls Modernism, through to very best in Modern Art, Barcelona sparkles with cosmopolitan culture and style.

The origins of the city of Barcelona go back to the settlement of Layetanas tribes, approximately in the 2000 BC, devoted first to the agriculture and the stockbreeding and then the trade with the Greeks, Phoenician and finally whit the Romans. The area was settled by Laietani at Bakeno on the Táber Hill (carrer Paradis) and the Laie, believed to have been located on Montjüic.

In 237 BC. Carthagian general Hamilcar Barca, lands in the colony in the middle of the war against Rome, (Punic War) but neither him nor his successors, Hasdrúbal and Hanníbal, managed to snatch the control of the Peninsula from Rome. With the defeat in 218 BC,  the Roman domination of the colony is sealed.

Roman Barcino.
In 15 b.C Roma marked the destiny of the city. The name Barcino was formalised around the reign of Caesar August. The Colony Faventia: Julia Augusta Paterna Faventia Barcino, at the foot of a hummock called Mons Taber, (Táber Hill), became definitely a city in times of Emperor Augustus, after the last military campaingns against the Cantabrian and Asturias, right where the popular Barri Gòtic (gothic quarter) lies today.

Visigothic domination and Muslim domination
Ataulfo, visigithic leader, once conquered the city of Barcino, made of it the capital of his kingdom, defining the occupation of the territory and making the end of the presence of the Roman Empire of occident.

The Visigothic rule will result in Arab invasion of the Iberian Peninsula in 711.

The reaction of the French to the Arab expansion, will result in the birth of the Marca Hispanica in the period of Charlemagne. This territory later known as Catalonia which will subsequently be joined to the Crown of Aragon.

During the Medieval period, Wilkfredo el Velloso  was the founder of the counts dynasty of Barcelona.
The birth of the Aragonese Crown case with the marriage of Ramon Berenguer IV Count of Barcelona and Petronilla of Aragon in 1150 and will dissolve after the War of Spanish Succession (1714)

The union of the Crown of Castile and Leon with that of Aragon, unify the peninsula that will materialize with the Spanish conquest of Granada in 1492.

The descendants of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, governed Spain until the War of Succession (1701 1714).

Barcelona suffer for the misunderstandings with the Bourbon kings of Spain and now when the changes will lead to the historic birth of the second Spanish Republic (1931) events fell into civil war (1936 1939) which will bring the Spain under the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

Dictatorship led Barcelona to a new period of decline marked by strong social and cultural immigration but ended with the seventies, coinciding with a return to democracy.

BARCELONA TODAY.
Barcelona took the opportunity of a new urban development due to the recovery of identity and political culture. The Olympic Games, organized in 1992, contributed much to the development of the Catalan capital. In the years between the Olympic designation in 1986 and 1992, Barcelona has transformed radically, renewal, expansion and promoting its image worldwide as Urbe cosmopolitan with a mark cultural.
