HISTORY OF BARCELONAAs Spain's second largest metropolis, Barcelonians feel their city matches the nation's capital in every respect and especially in its art and architecture. The name Barcino was formalised around the reign of Caesar August. The Colony Faventia: Julia Augusta Paterna Faventia Barcino, at the foot of a hummock called Mons Taber, (Táber Hill), became definitely a city in times of Emperor Augustus, after the last military campaingns against the Cantabrian and Asturias, right where the popular Barri Gòtic (gothic quarter) lies today. Visigothic domination and Muslim domination Ataulfo, visigithic leader, once conquered the city of Barcino, made of it the capital of his kingdom, defining the occupation of the territory and making the end of the presence of the Roman Empire of occident. The descendants of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon, governed Spain until the War of Succession (1701 1714).
